The Daily Mirror produces NextGen covid-19 supplement

‘NextGen: Our World Interrupted’ featured in Tuesday's paper.

The Daily Mirror published a 'NextGen' print supplement this week, providing readers with insights into how younger generations have been impacted by covid-19.

The 'NextGen' project launched last year, giving young people the chance to guest edit the print and digital editions of the Daily Mirror for one day.

Prior to the lockdown, the Daily Mirror had planned to run a second print edition of the 'NextGen' paper but lockdown meant that the edition turned into a covid-19 supplement focussing on the impact the pandemic is having on youths.

From tips on health and happiness by 23-year-old TikTok star Holly Hubert to the fact that period poverty is spiralling out of control due the coronavirus crisis by 18-year-old Taryn Everdeen, the supplement tackles issues at times are overlooked.

Mirror Editor-in-Chief, Alison Phillips said: “Rather than give up on the project we felt there was so much to be written about coronavirus from young people’s perspectives; the experiences of those who’ve helped out voluntarily or as paid carers, those who’ve had exams and college postponed, and those fearful for their job prospects if we are plunged into recession.”

She added: “In recent years many have been quick to dismiss today’s young people as a ‘snowflake generation’. But the way in which thousands of youngsters have selflessly stepped up to play their part in supporting others during coronavirus should put paid to that myth for good.”
