3 in 4 people read newsbrands every week

Latest PAMCo data shows that 24.9 million people read newsbrands on a daily basis (47% of British adults), whether in print format, or via their desktops or mobile devices (smartphone or tablet).

PAMCo data for the period April 2017 – March 2018 shows that an impressive 77% (40.4 million) of the population read newsbrands across multiple platforms every week and 84% (44.4 million) every month.

With half the population (26.5 million) accessing newsbrands via their smartphones and tablets every week and 61% (32.2 million) every month — mobile is the most popular platform for newsbrand readers on a weekly and monthly basis. Smartphones are favoured over tablets by the majority, with 85% (22.6 million) of the total mobile audience accessing newsbrands this way every week. In fact, 78% (20.6 million) of weekly mobile readers solely read newsbrands via their smartphones.

Despite the increased popularity of digital platforms, almost 10 million daily readers exclusively consume newsbrands via print. On a daily basis, print is the most popular medium with 25% (13.3 million) of the population, picking up and reading a newspaper every day. Furthermore 79% (9.1 million) of daily readers agree that they have a strong connection with their print newsbrands.

Print is popular with young people too, one in three (5.1 million) read print newsbrands every week and almost half read every month (6.7 million), with 57% (1.3 million) of 18-34s saying that print newsbrands offer them something they can’t get elsewhere. Digital platforms provide a significant uplift to print – 87% on a daily basis, 70% on a weekly and 53% on a monthly basis.
