People spend 70 minutes of quality time with newspapers

New IPA TouchPoints 2017 data shows that readers are now spending an average of 1 hour and 10 minutes with their newspaper, on the days that they read.

In a world of infinite content and fake news, newsbrands’ role as a trusted medium is becoming increasingly important. We know that they require high attention and that readers have a strong relationship with their chosen title(s); the trusted quality content engages them and the personal connection ensures that they put time aside for reading.

60% of regular newspaper print readers do not consume any other media at the same time as reading newspapers, but how much time are they actually spending?

According to the latest IPA TouchPoints survey, print readers are spending 1 hour and 10 minutes with their daily newspapers on the days that they read. Unsurprisingly, Sunday newspaper readers are spending a little longer - 1 hour and 21 minutes, with some readers even reading the Sunday titles for a further 52 minutes a day throughout the week (Monday to Saturday).

Men are spending slightly longer reading print than women (73 minutes vs 66 minutes) during the week (Monday to Saturday) but when it comes to Sunday reading, women spend substantially longer with their tablets (83 minutes vs 50 mins).

The average reader spends 50 minutes reading on their PC (on the days that they read), with the number increasing slightly for those in full time employment (52 minutes). Adults over 55 spend longer reading print newspapers during the week (77 mins) when compared with 18-34s (46 minutes), but young people (18-34s) spend more time reading newsbrands on their smartphones (55 minutes vs 47 minutes).
