The Independent continues to grow at home and abroad

The news brand records its third consecutive year of profit since becoming a fully digital publisher.

Turnover now stands at £27million, with profits of £2.3million as advertising revenues grow by 10%.

A 12% increase in spending on its editorial team has helped boost numbers, with 100 journalists now based in cities around the world.

Since going digital-only back in 2016, The Independent has doubled its revenue and increased its turnover by 9%.

Editor Christian Broughton said: “The growing editorial team has risen to every challenge, and the future newsroom growth will no doubt see the journalism here leap from strength to strength.”

Chair of Independent Digital News and Media Ltd, John Paton added: “The Independent has been profitable since going all-digital and nearly four years in it continues to grow substantially on the top line.”

The publication is enjoying great international success, up 22% from last year, the title attracts 95 million unique browsers. In the U.S., The Independent attracted 30 million monthly unique visitors (18% growth year on year). These numbers are greater than digital giants such as Vice and Vox.
