Mail Metro Media celebrates Daily Mail’s 125th anniversary with 125 charity donations

The news brand is celebrating 125 years since the launch of Daily Mail by inviting industry peers to nominate a charity to receive a £125 donation.

The competition recognises Daily Mail’s proud history of campaigning for good causes, since its launch on May 4th 1896.

Most recently, Daily Mail created its own charity Mail Force, which raised more than £10million to buy PPE for frontline NHS workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, to solve the shortage in government supply. In its #ComputersForKids campaign earlier this year, Mail Force also raised £10million to provide laptops for school children struggling to complete lessons from home – a campaign backed by Vodafone and a host of celebrities including Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry and David Beckham.

Grant Woodthorpe, executive director – investment at Mail Metro Media said: “Daily Mail has always been a force for good, with a long history of campaigning for the issues its readers feel passionate about. We could think of no better way to mark 125 years since the newspaper was first printed and distributed nationwide, than giving 125 of our industry friends the chance to give something back too.”

Daily Mail has had a number of memorable and impactful campaigns for good causes in recent history, starting with its 2008 ‘Banish the bags’ front page, which successfully lobbied for the introduction of a 5p plastic carrier bag charge and resulted in the newspaper’s partnership with Keep Britain Tidy and its annual Great British Spring Clean litter pick event.

In 2018, the Mail created a volunteer army of 24,000 people to help the struggling NHS, after asking readers to find time to help patients and take pressure off frontline staff. The recruitment drive – the biggest in Britain since the 2012 Olympics and backed by health unions – was a partnership between the Mail and the charity Helpforce. The campaign was repeated again in March 2020, resulting in 750,000 volunteers signing up within five days of Daily Mail’s calls for action to ease the workload of key workers fighting the coronavirus.
