We WILL remember them

Sports personalities join the Daily Mirror’s Remembrance Sunday campaign.

“We can still unite to do them proud” read the Daily Mirror on 16 October as it called on readers to join its Remembrance Sunday drive.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the event at the Cenotaph will be closed to the public and parades by the Royal British Legion have been cancelled.

As communities across the country are unable to pay their respects, the news brand is asking the people to stand on your doorstep at 11 am on Sunday 8 November to mark the traditional two-minute silence.

The same article on 16 October wrote: “A nation divided by coronavirus measures can still come together to pay tribute to our veterans and offer thanks to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. In this year, of all years, we shall make sure they have never been forgotten.”

This week, the campaign has been backed by England football manager Gareth Southgate, London 2012 Olympics champ Jessica Ennis-Hill, former world boxing champ Frank Bruno and many more.

Southgate commented: “It is a fitting way for us to collectively remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice during these challenging times.”

And former heavyweight boxing champion Bruno added: “I’m asking people of all ages to join me in spending two minutes of our busy lives in commemoration and thanks.

“Thousands made the ultimate sacrifice for you and me.

“Turn the phone off, turn the TV and radio off and give these people the acknowledgement they deserve.”

In Wednesday's edition of the paper, a free Remembrance Day poster was included.
