News Corp wins Premier League rights aboard

The company now owns the UK digital rights to Barclay’s Premier League clips in Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia.

News Corp, whose affiliate, News UK, already owns the rights to internet and mobile content of the Premier League in the UK, will now be able to provide exclusive digital coverage of the football action in Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia when the season starts this Saturday.

The terms of the deal means that News Corp have the rights to the 380 games which make up the Barclays Premier League season, and they will continue to retain the rights over the next three seasons.

Within Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia the media company has also won the UK rights to the FA Cup, the Sky Bet Championship and the Capital One Cup.

Robert Thomson, the chief executive of News Corp, said: “European football is growing exponentially in popularity in Asia, particularly among the younger generation, whose passion for the game is complemented by a rapidly increasing adoption of smartphones.”

Richard Scudamore, the chief executive of the Barclays Premier League, added: “We are extremely pleased that News Corp has chosen to invest in our mobile and internet clips rights in Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia.

“Their expertise in multi-platform news and sport coverage means that fans in all three territories can look forward to comprehensive Barclays Premier League clips being available on their smartphones, tablets and other devices.”

News Corps’ share of digital football coverage in Indonesia, Japan and Vietnam doesn’t end there, with the company also having secured the rights to the German Bundesliga, the French Ligue 1, Serie A in Italy, the Brazilian Championship an Major League Soccer for the next two years.
