News International unveils Sun+

News International announced yesterday that The Sun will go behind a paywall from 1 August.

For £2 a week the new service, named Sun+, will provide users with seven-day access to The Sun online, via tablet and smartphone apps.

News International confirmed that the new service will include access to Premier League football highlights, which the organisation won the rights to in January, as well as perks such as “exclusive offers and promotions”.

Mike Darcey, chief executive of News International, said that the introduction of Sun+ “ensures we will be offering a compelling paid-for package across all our titles, delivering great value for news that is worth paying for”.

Darcey hopes that the addition of the football highlights in particular, which will run across all of News International’s online titles, will allow them to “build on The Times’ credentials as Sports Newspaper of the Year, The Sun’s reputation as the paper for football and The Sunday Times’ renowned in-depth analysis and comment.”
