Guardian ad wins Cannes Silver Lion award

A Guardian ad won a Silver Lion when the Press section of the Cannes Lions Awards 2013 were announced during a ceremony in the South of France on Wednesday.

The 'Maggiemite' ad, created by BBH London, was recognised in the 'Publications & Media' category. It was used to advertise a Saturday Guardian supplement created by writer and cartoonist Posy Simmonds following Margaret Thatcher's death in April. The piece plays on Marmite's famous 'Love it or hate it' brand to allude to the polarising nature of the former prime minister's time in power.

Another British agency to be recognised was ADAM&EVEDDB London, who earned a Bronze Lion in the 'Other Vehicles, Auto Products and Services' category for their 'City Emergency Brake' campaign on behalf of Volkswagen.

The night's big award, the Press Lions Grand Prix, was given to TBWA\Media Arts Lab in Los Angeles for their Apple iPad mini campaign. The winning ads featured on the back cover of some of America's best-known magazines, like The New Yorker, Wired and Time magazine, showing a copy of each publication's front page, but on a life-size iPad mini.

The full list of Press Lions winners can be found on the Cannes Lions website.
